Bio Óleos de Maxixe (BOM) is a young, environmentally-focused business initiative committed to creating partnerships with communities in rural Mozambique to sustainably harvest local oilseeds, extract natural oils and manufacture a unique line of organic value-added products, while incentivizing the preservation of native forests. BOM seeks to promote community investment in the environment, secure income for vulnerable populations, utilize lesser-known native oils, and promote high-quality, environmentally-conscious and locally-made products as alternatives to imported goods. The project is led by ad schwarz, who was elected an Ashoka Fellow for his work in community based environmental development (www.allanschwarz.com).

The BOM project:

  • Provides technical support to community associations in order to facilitate the production and commercialization of high quality organic oils
  • Develops organizational and business capacity of community associations
  • Provides a consistent market to participating association members for sustainably-harvested local oilseed
  • Promotes food security through income generation and the promotion of nutritious species
  • Trains and employs local women in the extraction of specialty cold-press oils, as well as the production and packaging of value-added, market-ready products
  • Promotes the preservation of a dwindling resource – Mozambique’s native forests
  • Brings additional income into communities by arranging third party organic and ethical trade certification
